Cox’s Bazar, Ukhia: Police have recovered the body of a young Rohingya woman from a shelter in Ukhia on Saturday night. The deceased has been identified as Asma Akhtar, aged twenty, daughter of Syed Amin from Camp 8 East.
The body was found inside a room in Ward Seven of the Palongkhali Union Chairman Project area at around nine o’clock in the night.
Upon receiving the information, police from Ukhia Station visited the location, conducted a primary examination of the scene and sent the body to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital for post mortem analysis. Officers also collected preliminary evidence from the room.
Citing her family, the police said that Asma may have committed suicide by hanging herself from a tree beam. Asma’s mother, Zarina Begum, after seeing her daughter in that condition, cried out in shock.
Officer in Charge Ziaul Haque of Ukhia Police Station said that investigators are not yet able to confirm whether the death resulted from suicide or any other cause. He stated that the findings of the autopsy, together with witness statements and evidence, will determine the actual nature of the incident.
Police have already taken statements from family members and neighbours. They said the investigation is considering every possible angle, including the possibility of criminal involvement.
