Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif Meets President Xi Jinping in Beijing

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chinese President Xi Jinping held talks in Beijing during the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Pakistan and China, reaffirming their commitment to deeper strategic cooperation.

BEIJING, May 25, 2026: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif held a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing on Sunday, reaffirming the long-standing strategic partnership between Pakistan and China as the two countries mark the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations.

According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), the meeting took place in a “warm and cordial atmosphere” and focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation, regional stability, and future strategic coordination.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar, Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, along with senior ministers and government officials, also attended the meeting.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif thanked President Xi Jinping for the warm reception and stated that the Pakistan-China All-Weather Strategic Cooperative Partnership remains the cornerstone of Pakistan’s foreign policy.

He described the relationship between the two countries as an “iron-clad friendship” that has gained increasing strategic importance amid changing regional and global dynamics.

The prime minister reiterated Pakistan’s support for China on its core interests, including the One China Principle, and appreciated China’s continued support for Pakistan’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, economic stability, and national development.

Referring to his recent visit to Hangzhou, Prime Minister Shehbaz praised President Xi Jinping’s role in the development of Zhejiang Province during his tenure as governor from 2002 to 2007. He also commended President Xi’s leadership, saying it had transformed China into a major global power.

The prime minister expressed appreciation for China’s support for Pakistan’s regional peace efforts and welcomed President Xi Jinping’s four-point proposal for regional peace.

He stated that Pakistan-China cooperation serves as a stabilizing force during what he described as turbulent global times.

Prime Minister Shehbaz also praised several Chinese global initiatives, including the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), Global Development Initiative (GDI), Global Security Initiative (GSI), Global Civilization Initiative (GCI), and Global Governance Initiative.

He reaffirmed Pakistan’s support for China’s vision of building a “Community with a Shared Future for Humanity.”

The two leaders discussed expanding bilateral cooperation in multiple sectors, including industrialization, connectivity, science and technology, agriculture, clean energy, and digital transformation.

The prime minister emphasized the importance of advancing high-quality China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) development and aligning China’s 15th Five-Year Plan with Pakistan’s “Uraan Pakistan” development vision.

He also welcomed the inclusion of Pakistani astronauts in China’s space station programme, describing it as a reflection of growing cooperation between the two countries.

President Xi Jinping stated that China and Pakistan had built an “unbreakable traditional friendship” based on mutual understanding, trust, and support.

He added that China would continue to prioritize relations with Pakistan in its neighborhood diplomacy regardless of changes in the international environment.

Both leaders agreed to further strengthen bilateral ties and transform the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations into a new phase of strategic, practical, and future-oriented cooperation.
