Dhaka — Police are continuing their search for Sub Inspector Rakibul Hasan Sarkar of Kalabagan Police Station, who has been missing for nine days, with investigators now suspecting that he may have deliberately gone into hiding.
Rakibul Hasan Sarkar, 32, disappeared on April 28 after leaving the police station barracks in civilian clothing. Although his mobile phone remains switched off, police say a withdrawal of Tk 5,000 from his bank account through an Islami Bank ATM booth in the Gulistan area has led investigators to believe he may still be moving voluntarily.
Kalabagan Police Station Officer in Charge Fazle Ashiq said Rakibul has not returned home or contacted his family since his disappearance. He added that colleagues who shared the barracks with him had spoken about his frustration with work related pressure.
According to the officer, Rakibul had previously discussed difficulties coping with the stress of his duties and had mentioned the issue several times to fellow officers.
Police have filed a General Diary over the incident and informed police stations across the country in an effort to locate him.
Officials said Rakibul had previously worked at the Income Tax Department and later at the Police Bureau of Investigation before being transferred to Kalabagan Police Station about a month ago.
Family members and colleagues reportedly remain uncertain about the reason behind his disappearance. Coworkers said there were no known major problems in his personal or family life, although relatives later told them that he had recently been under mental stress related to his workload.
According to police, Rakibul first left the barracks at around 5:30 PM on April 28 in plain clothes, saying he had night duty. He later returned and left again at approximately 7:45 PM, also in civilian clothing.
Officer in Charge Fazle Ashiq said Rakibul carried his mobile phone and charger when he left, but did not take any official weapon with him.
Police have now officially listed him as absent without leave while the search continues.
Authorities say both his family and fellow officers remain deeply concerned about his whereabouts and safety.
