Maungdaw North, Arakan State — A Rohingya man described by residents as a civilian and religious teacher was shot and taken into custody on April 17 in Kyet Yoe Pyin village in northern Maungdaw Township, according to local sources.
The incident reportedly took place at around 3:00 PM when more than 20 members of the Arakan Army entered the village, causing panic among residents. The man, identified as Malavi Mohammad Kawbir, son of U Abdul Kawrim, was shot multiple times, reportedly around five, before being taken away.
Residents said Malavi Mohammad Kawbir was a fisherman and farmer and also taught at a local mosque. They stated that the reason for the shooting and his detention has not been clarified.
According to local accounts, the forces accused him of having links with the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army. He was reportedly taken to a hilltop camp located along the road between Ngan Chaung village and Kyet Yoe Pyin village.
Residents further reported that more than 100 troops have since surrounded Kyet Yoe Pyin and nearby areas, including the Ngar Sar Kyu village tract. House-to-house searches are said to be ongoing.
People in the area say the situation has created widespread fear, with families concerned about further arrests. Residents have called for an end to actions targeting civilians and warned that such developments are likely to worsen conditions in the area.
